Photoshoot for newborn Sydney

Hilarious stories from sleep-deprived mothers.

As a newborn photographer, I get the chance to chat with new mums during our sessions, which I really enjoy. Since a photoshoot for newborn usually takes a couple of hours, we have plenty of time to feed and settle your little one a few times throughout. During this time, we talk about everything—from the pregnancy journey and those early days with a newborn, to all things parenting. Today, I’d love to share some funny ‘pregnancy brain’ stories that I’ve heard from my clients, come across online, or even experienced myself.

Pregnancy brain or baby brain is the mental fog many expecting mums and new mums say they experience. At some point in the pregnancy, a woman is likely to suspect that the baby has somehow hijacked her brain. Some research suggests that pregnancy changes the brain for as long as two years.

One of my own funny fog moments happened when my son was around 3 months old. He wasn’t the best sleeper, so I might blame sleep deprivation for this. One morning, as I was in the shower, I found myself wondering why everything around me looked so blurry. Then it hit me—I still had my glasses on while showering! Oh, baby brain is definitely real!

From forgetting how to spell their own name to showing up at the shops in flannel pajama pants, here are some more hilarious things mothers have blamed on baby brain:

“Always putting milk in the cupboard.”

“I used a torch on my phone to look for my phone in a dark room. I walked around for what felt like ages screaming: “Where’s my bloody phone!”

“Left house keys on the car roof.”

“Multiple episodes of walking into a room, pausing, looking around for clues as to why I’m there and leaving the room.”

“I once dropped dirty socks and undies in the loo instead of the laundry basket.”

“I got off the train and could remember where I was going. I sat down and cried while I remembered.”

“Turned up on the wrong day of the week to my mother’s group.”

“I left dad in charge and set off to the supermarket for groceries. I managed to forget what I’m doing, end up in the toy shop instead, get home with no groceries.”

“Every time we go anywhere I ask my 4-year-old to count how many babies are in the car to make sure I haven’t forgotten anyone.”

“I’ve made a phone call with the calculator wondering why it didn’t ring.”

“Poured the boiled water from the kettle into the full jar of instant coffee instead of into my cup.”

We’ve all been there! It’s comforting to know that these moments are a common experience among mothers. It’s a sign that our brains are juggling so much during this incredible time. The good news is that our memory does come back eventually, even if it takes a bit of time.

Despite the sleep deprivation and those forgetful moments, the love and joy we receive from our little ones make it all worthwhile. Every giggle, cuddle, and milestone is a reminder of why we go through this challenging yet beautiful journey. The bond we form with our babies and the happiness they bring to our lives far outweighs the temporary brain fog. So, hang in there and cherish those special moments—they’re what truly count in the end.
