Photoshoot with Newborn

Photoshoot with newborn workflow.

An experienced newborn photographer produces consistent results during every photoshoot with newborn. The key to successful newborn photoshoot is patience and a good workflow.

At the beginning of the photography session, I aim to go through family and siblings with the baby photos first. However, if the baby arrives for the photo shoot awake, this would be a great chance to start with a few awake newborn portraits and get the baby to have milk after that.

A swaddle, combined with the heat and white noise, can send a full baby off to dreamland in a matter of minutes. Once the baby is fast asleep, I will go through the family with newborn photos. I usually photograph siblings with the baby shots first, then mum with the newborn shots, family portraits, and dad with the baby portraits.

I put the wrapped baby on the bean-bag first to create a few simple and timeless portraits.

I will slowly unwrap the baby and continue on with the back lying pose as it is a nice and easy transition. If the baby is in a deep sleep sometimes I have a chance to go through all naked poses on bean-bag slowly transitioning the newborn to the side and to the tummy poses.

Once I have done all the bean-bag poses we can do a couple of props chosen by parents. The most popular props are the nest and a tiny bed. I’m not a huge fan of putting newborns in the buckets and bowls. I like to use some props tastefully to emphasise how tiny and cute newborn baby is, I also love some timeless and not overpowered by props portraits just about your baby.

If the baby wakes up, mum gives the little one another feed and we continue with the photo shoot.

At the end of the newborn photography session I often try to sneak in another set of family and newborn photographs.

That was my typical new born photo shoot workflow. Every session is a bit different as I always ask parents what style of photos they love. Sometimes they ask for more props. Some parents prefer only natural portraits without any accessories. Sometimes newborns are very fussy and not sleepy at all. My aim to capture photos that you love, I am able to adapt my workflow depending on parents requests and baby’s mood.
