How to manage a fussy baby at photo session.

Newborn photography session with a fussy baby can be incredibly challenging, but it still can be successful knowing some tips and handling by experienced photographer. I am a Sydney newborn photographer, I’ve been working with newborns exclusively for the last 5 years. I photographed hundreds of new babies and I am also a mum to a sweet little boy myself, I saw lots of different newborn photography session scenarios and I met so many different babies, so now I am pretty confident in delivering beautiful final results for each and every family.

This little sweetheart was one of the babies who settles only when being held, she would wake up the second you put her on the beanbag or in the prop, no matter how gently you were. We tried everything – shushing, swaddling, lot’s of milk, warm room… All the trick newborn photographers know and do. I normally never rush the sessions so we are not stressed if we need some extra time.
When I meet babies like this the best thing is start photograph them awake in the props and using different accessories and colours to get variety of photos for the mum and dad. Photographing awake and unsettled babies is a challenge but almost always you can get decent photos if you are persistent. At some point you should be lucky and get at least one sleepy curled-up setup of the newborn. In this session we were finally be able to get this little princess to 15 min sleep and I captured a couple of posed photos on the bean bag. Family photos are also a great option with the fussy babies as they normally would be more settled when parent holds them and gently rocks them.

I was delighted to provide this beautiful family with these images. Mum shared that she was especially thrilled to see more awake portraits in the gallery, finding that they truly captured her daughter’s personality. I have to agree—this little one has such stunning eyes, and her awake photos really bring out her unique charm. I’m so glad I was able to capture those moments for them.
