Older Newborn Photos.

Sometimes I get asked to photograph a baby who is older than the typical newborn. I always have to let the parents know that we should limit our expectations capturing older newborn photos. I aim for a “baby-led” session.

This cute little baby girl was 6 weeks old when I captured her photos. She was doing really great and I was able to get a few sleepy photos of her in the props. Posed photos are not always possible at this age, as older babies wake up very easily when you undress and move them into props. However, I always try to get some posed sleepy shots. Occasionally it works well.

 

Newborn photo sessions ideally need to be done within the first 10-14 days. There are lots of reasons for this. In the first few weeks babies are able to curl up into those adorable squishy poses. Also newborns at this age tend to sleep more, leading to a smoother photo session.

That being said, sometimes mums and dads didn’t know newborn photos needed to be done so soon. Sometimes is is just too overwhelming due to rough birth. There may be many other reasons to delay with the session. What if you miss that perfect 2 weeks window? Can your little one still have a newborn session?

I have captured quite a few babies that were over my preferred age – up to 6-8 weeks. For older newborn photos we can swaddle them up, we can take gorgeous awake photos, we can take beautiful family (and sibling) photos, and sometimes we can get those sleepy poses too.

Newborn sessions are easier when newborn babies are only a few days old. However it is still possible to deliver beautiful newborn photographs for a family despite their baby being outside of the ideal window.
