Before and After Newborn Photography Retouching

Some of you may know that my journey in the photography industry began as a Photoshop Retoucher. I spent years perfecting my skills in retouching, and I believe it’s a crucial part of ensuring your photos look their absolute best. Retouching is more than just a technical skill—it’s an art that enhances the final images while preserving their natural beauty. When choosing a photographer, it’s important to know that they have the expertise to handle retouching correctly, as it makes a significant difference in the quality of your photos.

My philosophy on newborn photography editing is to keep it simple and never overdo. My aim isn’t to make your baby look like a doll, but to enhance their natural beauty with just a touch of polish. I pay close attention to detail in every session to ensure your photos are both stunning and true to life. To give you an idea of what I mean, I’m sharing an example of a newborn edit here on my blog. Below, you’ll find a Before and After image showcasing the skin retouching involved, including spot removal, skin toning, and skin softening. This process helps to highlight your baby’s natural charm while keeping the overall look genuine and warm.

In the example below, you’ll see a little one with baby acne, which made the editing a bit tricky but serves as a good illustration of the process. Most babies under 2 weeks typically have fewer skin spots, so your little one’s photos will likely need less touch-up.

After your newborn’s session I import the files into my computer and start the process of perfecting those beautiful images I captured. I colour correct the photos in general, work on contrast, correct too much red or yellow in the skin colour. During the retouching step of my editing process, I remove baby acne, flaky skin, scratches and anything else that is not going to be a permanent part of your baby’s skin. My aim is to gently remove those temporary skin imperfections without changing how your baby naturally looks.
