DIY newborn photos

How to take your own DIY newborn photos.

Today I’d like to share with you how to capture some DIY newborn photos. You will learn how to take sweet and simple baby pictures on your own.
I know this won’t quite be the same as a professional newborn shoot, but we mums are thankful for every cute picture we have of our babies. They grow up so fast!

Here is a newborn photo that we will try to replicate today:

As you can see, to capture this image I used studio lights and a professional camera.
However, if you don’t have expensive photography gear, there are still things you can do to get a great photo of your baby at home.

You will need:

  1. Your newborn.
  2. Natural light from the window.
  3. White blanket.
  4. Firm pillow.
  5. The best camera (or the best phone) you can get your hands on.
  6. Baby outfit.

I don’t have a baby model today, so I’ll be taking some photos of my reborn doll.

Find a biggest window in your house. You will need indirect soft day light coming through. The sun can NOT be shining through the window at the time of your shoot.
Turn off your overhead lights.

Warm the room you will be working in.

Spread the blanket on the floor as it shown on the image below.
Give your baby a good feed, a good burp and rock your baby to sleep.
Gently place the baby on the pillow. Patience will help you. Putting your hands on your baby and patting in a gentle rhythm may help to settle your little one.
Take time to “fix” the little things as creases on the clothes, it makes a difference.
Try to position baby’s legs and feet comfy and nicely. Take your time!

Please notice, the light is coming down the window hitting the baby’s face first and then going down to the baby’s feet. Light is important.

Gently try to place your baby’s hand under the cheek (see the image bellow):

Take your camera. Try to photograph over the baby’s head (do not take photos up baby’s nose), this way you should get a good angle:

The first photo is sweet, but not quite the right angle, the second photo to me works well:

Make sure your photos are not blurry. Get creative and take multiple shots from multiple angles:
