Newborn photos with siblings are the most treasured for parents. However, a photo shoot with a newborn can be challenging for siblings. Adjusting to a new baby brother or sister can be a rough road for some children. Sibling photos are the hardest with the ones who won’t cooperate. As a Sydney newborn photographer I always do my best to help get that one photo using a few tricks.

I do my best to play and be silly with the older children during the newborn photo shoot. I talk to them about their interests. I use a soft ball, asking if the kid can catch but not end up throwing it. I use toys that squeaks or rattles. I get the parents involved playing boo or giving them a little tickle. If those things don’t work I pull out my phone and play their favourite song, I hold the phone on top of my lens to get their attention.

If sibling is old enough and does well with holding their baby siblings that is my favourite option.

My most favourite pose for newborn photography is the flokati siblings shot. It’s difficult sometimes, but i always gave it a go. But sometimes, we can’t get the older sibling to lay down.

If siblings are not willing to lay down on a rag hold the baby, I suggest putting the baby in a prop. I have mum bring sultanas or marshmallows and then we stash a few next to baby. When the sibling reaches for the snack, it looks like they are reaching for baby.

Newborn photography with family is a collaborative effort between family and photographer. The key is patience, working with children we need patience and experience.
