Baby Photography Styles

I’ve been specialising in baby photography for over 10 years and absolutely could not imagine doing anything else now. Thank you for visiting my blog, this is where you read and see some of my insights regarding my journey as a Sydney Newborn Photographer. Welcoming a new baby is the most amazing time in anyone’s life. No replay! I help families capturing memories, as I know one day it will be a blur.
Newborn photography sessions are truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to capture the tiny details of your beautiful new baby. Little ones grow so fast and change every day. It is such a small window after birth before babies start to change.

For newborn sessions, I love using some beautiful props to capture “curled-up” newborns in them. Parents often request a vintage basket, a tiny doll bed, or a twig nest. A newborn shoot is your ‘once in a lifetime’ chance to get those adorable photos. Babies grow so fast! However, on some of my newborn set-ups I try to use no props at all. I try to document the baby the way they actually are. Simple, timeless, natural baby photography with neutral tones and beautiful lighting.

In other words, my aim is to blend the best of both posed and natural newborn photography styles in a single session. Of course, if you prefer, you can choose to focus on just one style for your photos.

I also encourage mums, dads and siblings to be involved in the photo shoot. These family photographs are certainly the most treasured in years to come not only for you but for your child.

I usually incorporate a mix of posed and natural styles throughout your session. However, I always chat with parents about their preferences, including style, accessories, props, and favorite colors. Over the years, I’ve had clients who preferred an entirely natural style with no props, and others who, despite having a good camera and an interest in photography, lacked the skills and props to achieve those sleepy, posed baby shots on their own. For those clients, a posed newborn photography session was exactly what they were looking for when they booked with me.

We all are different and I always keep this in mind. At the beginning of your newborn photo shoot, we discuss your preferred styles and I do my best to capture your baby beautifully in a way that suits you.

Newborn photography is best booked in while you are expecting. Newborn babies are best photographed in the first 2 weeks of birth while they are sleepy and easily posed. Newborns change and grow incredibly quickly. They are only tiny and “curled up” for a very short time. Once your baby arrives, we schedule a suitable time within the following 2 weeks. This ensures baby is still very sleepy and curled up, this is how we get all those beautiful curled up poses.
